The CISO Readiness Score

Most Directors are told they are "not quite ready" for the CISO seat without ever being told what ready means. This is what search firms and hiring panels actually check: score yourself honestly and get the specific gaps to close, in order.

01 Executive altitude

Do you own risk-acceptance decisions today, or do you escalate them to someone else?

Owning the decision (and its consequences) is the line between advisor and executive.

Have you presented to a board or audit committee, even one section of someone else’s deck?

Recruiters probe for this artifact specifically. "I prepared the deck" is not the same evidence.

Can you state your program’s value in business terms (revenue protected, deals enabled, risk dollars) without naming a tool?

The "too technical" rejection is really the absence of this sentence.

02 Scope evidence

Do you own a security budget and defend it through a full planning cycle?

Budget ownership is the scope signal search firms weigh most.

Do you manage managers, or run a function with multiple teams?

The seat is an org-running job. Depth as an IC-plus-team-lead reads one level down.

Have you led a cross-functional crisis end to end: a major incident, M&A diligence, or a regulator exam?

This is the story every loop asks for. You need at least one you own completely.

03 Business fluency

Can you explain, in one minute, how your company makes money and which systems that depends on?

The crown-jewels answer that starts from revenue, not from assets.

Do you have a working relationship with your CFO or General Counsel today?

If the first CFO negotiation of your life happens in an interview, it shows.

Have you used security to help close a customer deal or unblock revenue?

Security-as-sales-enabler is the story CEOs lean forward for.

04 Search readiness

Does your title and LinkedIn read as executive-track: Director-plus, outcomes not tools?

Search associates filter on exactly this before a human ever reads your profile.

Do you have relationships with two or three executive recruiters who place security leaders?

Built before you need them, or built too late. There is no third option.

Can you answer "why the CISO seat, and why now" in three sentences, without mentioning compensation?

The recruiter screen opens here. A rehearsed-sounding answer is fine; a missing one is not.
